Detailed
Description
Proposal by the Rabbinate of Constantinople to alleviate the problem of agunot. The title page states that Mahberet Kiddushin al Tannai contains the proposal place before all the rabbis in positions of responsibility concerning enactments affecting daughters of Israel to deliver them from the snare of agunot by making a conditional kiddusion, as is explained in detail in this work. The title page is dated, “Justice, only justice shall you pursue תרדוף (684 = 1924)” (Deuteronomy 16:20). The text is in seven chapters, set in a single column in rabbinic type. At the end of the book are the names of several leading rabbis from Constantinople. Enclosed with the volume is a supportive letter on the stationary of the bes din Zedek of Constantinople, dated 24 Tishri 684 (Tuesday, October 4, 1923) with the names of these rabbis.

The condition of the agunah is a particularly sensitive issue in halakhah. An agunah is defined as a married woman who, for whatsoever reason, is separated from her husband and cannot remarry, either because she cannot obtain a divorce from him or because it is unknown whether he is still alive. The term is also applied to a yevamah (a levirate widow; if she cannot obtain halizah from the levir or if it is unknown whether he is still alive (Git. 26b, 33a; Yev. 94a; and Posekim). The problem of the agunah is one of the most complex in halakhic discussions and is treated in great detail in halakhic literature.

Benjamin Raphael ben Joseph, who brought this work to press, was the most important publisher in Constantinople between 1889 and 1928. He produced at least 30 books.
