Detailed
Description
Responsa on the controversial issue of grinding of flour in rahaim shel kittur (steam mill) which is called cylinder for Passover, which some permit and others forbid and the related laws and customs of the festival by R. Raphael Hayyim Moses ben Isaiah Benaim. R. Benaim strongly opposes and prohibits the use of such a mill. The reasons for the double title are explained on the detailed title page. They revolve around the words Tehinah (supplication) and Tahanah (milling), appropriate for the works subject matter. On the verso of the title page is a list of the prohibitions against hamez on Passover and below a brief statement by R. Benaim, Chief Rabbi of Gibraltar. There is an introduction, a warning to the reader on the severity of the prohibition against hamez. The text follows in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The title page is dated (672 = 1912) תער"ב but the introduction is dated (673 = 1913) תער"ג.

R. Raphael Hayyim Moses ben Isaiah Benaim (c. 1850-1920) was born in Tetuan, but emigrated to Palestine in his youth. He was a member of the bet din of Tiberias. In the 1870s he traveled to Turkey and North Africa as an emissary to collect charitable funds for Palestine. In Gibraltar he was chosen chief rabbi (1881), and held this position until his death. His other publications include Rahamim [initials of Raphael Hayyim Moses (son of) Isaya (and) Masudah] Peshutim, responsa (Tunis, 1910; but according to the preface not published before 1914), and other rabbinical works.
