Detailed
Description
Only edition of these novellae on aggadah in the Talmud by R. Samuel ben Azriel. The title page has a decorative border made up of three rows of florets and is dated from the verse, “And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, and let none of his words fall to the ground” (I Samuel 3:19). The text states that it was written by R. Samuel, av bet din שטרים, son of R. Azriel of Lunzburg. This is a work that will be pleasing to everyone on aggadah and halakhah on all of the Talmud. The title page states that the reasons for this work are to be found at length in the introduction. The verso of the title page has approbations from R. Mordecai ben Zevi Hirsch, R. Mordecai ben Abraham and R. Naphtali Hertz ben Benjamin Zev, and R. Jacob ben R. Zevi Hirsch of Pintschov. R. Samuel’s introduction follows, in which he recounts a blood libel a blood libel in Posen that occurred on Rosh HaShanah, 1736. A non-Jewish child died outside the city and a non-Jew found and stabbed the body so that it looked like a sieve and then charged the Jews with the crime. The authorities came and seized the rav. The details of this blood libel and its disastrous consequences are recounted by R. Samuel. The book is named after the verse in Pirkei Avot, that the world stands on three pillars, so this work is divided into three parts, Torah, Avodah, and Gemillat Hasidim. The second part of the book are likkutim on the Talmud.
