Detailed
Description
Halakhic novellae on tractates from the Babylonian Talmud by R. Levi ben Solomon of Brod. The title page has an attractive architectural frame with vine covered pillarsa and the face of a winged cherub near the bottom. Above this frame is floral design with small animals. There are verses on all four sides of the frame. The text of the title page is straightforward, stating that it is halakhic novellae on difficult passages in Rashi and Tosafot and on unclear aggada. It is dated with the verse, “Bless the Lord, O house of Levi!” (Psalms 135:20). On the verso of the title page are eight approbations from prominent rabbis, followed by the text. Bet Levi is set in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The novellae are on Berakhot, Shabbat, Eruvin, Pesahim, Rosh HaShanah, Yoma, Bezah, Megillah, Mo’ed Katan, Hagigah, Yevamot, Ketubbot, Kiddushin, Gittin, Nedarim, Sotah, Nazir, Bava Kamma, Bava Mezia, Bava Batra, Sanhedrin, Makkot, Shevu’ot, Horayot, Semahot, Zevahim, Menahot, Hullin, Arakhin, Bikkurim, and Niddah.

R. Levi ben Solomon of Brod was a Galician Talmudist (1680-1752). He was born in Zolkiew and died in Stanislav. He was, in addition to Bet Levi, the author of Atteret Shelomo (Zolkiew, 1739) on Midrash Rabbah.
