Detailed
Description
Discourses by R. Rafael ben Judah Ashkenazi. Mareh ha-Gadol was published posthumously by his son, R. Nissim Abraham ben Raphael (c.1790–1860), who, like his father, was rabbi in Izmir. The title page is dated, “He who gives strength הוא נתן עז (589 = 1829)” (Psalms 68:36). This is one, the second part was printed separately two years later. The verso of the title page has an introduction by the author’s son, the first ten paragraphs all beginning with Mareh. The text, set in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words, begins with eight derashot on Shabbat Teshuvah, followed by thirteen derashot on Shabbat Halbashah. Other subjects of R. Ashkenazi’s discourses are Shabbat Zekor, Shabbat ha-Gadol, Shabbat Kallah, and Sefer Torah, each the subject of several discourses. The volume concludes with indexes.

R. Rafael ben Judah Ashkenazi served as rabbi in Izmir, where he died in 1830. In addition to Mareh ha-Gadol he was the author of Mareh Enayim (Salonica, 1816), an index to the Talmud and to Rashi and Tosafot, after the model of R. Benvenisti's Sefer Keneset ha-Gedolah; Doresh Tov, a continuation Mareh ha-Gadol (Salonica, 1831). Appended to it is appended Seride Yehudah by R. Judah Ashkenazi's work; and Mareh ha-Nogah , containing observations on the works of Maimonides (Salonica, 1840).
