An early attempt to address the problem of agunot in America and related issues of divorce by Rev. Jacob Gershon Shain. The title page states that it is in two parts, that it is a colloquy behind the veil between two dear people, on the issue of the matter of arranging details of a divorce prior to the huppah, as is the intent of the Conservative rabbinate in America, because of the situation of agunot. The verso of the title page has English information, gives R. shains’s address as 85 Beale St. Brookline Mass., and prohibits reprinting, in whole or in part, even in translation, without the permission of the author. There are prefatory remarks, which describe the two parts, which states that it concerens an enactment by R. R. Judah Leib Epstein of Brookline Mass., that the groom betroth the bride prior to the huppah, making her an agent to write own get (bill of divorce from the time and that she can be divorced with it, without the knowledge of her husband, in one of three manners; 1) if her husband leaves and does not return in three years; 2) if he divorces her in civil court and refuses to give her a get; and 3) if he does not provide support for three consecutive years. The Conservative rabbinate in America has decided to follow this procedure. The Orthodox (haredim) rabbiniate in America and geonim elsewhere protested this enactment and prohibited following it. Part two addresses issues raised in the new York publication ha-Do’ar,from 12 Heshvan 1936, and R. Epstein on his enactment. Ha-Pargud addresses these issues comprehensively in a clear and lucid manner. Next is a word to the reader, in which R. Shain informs that Ha-Pargud was initially written as a small work with no intention of publishing it, but for an individual in New York, but as it proceeded it grew, and is now presented for publicxation. There is an approbation from five leading rabbis in Europe, among them R. Hayyim Ozar Grodzinski (1863–1940), R. Simeon Judah Shkop (1860–1940), R. Henokh Eigesh, R. Baruch Dovber Leibowitz, (1866–1939), and R. Elhanan Bunim Wasserman (1875–1941).
