||A defense of his work on the Talmud by Dr. Jakob Fromer, suggested by the title, Geschichte eines Lebenswerkes (History of a life’s work). There is a forward in which Fromer writes about Lazarus Goldschmidt’s criticism of his work, of which Geschichte eines Lebenswerkes is a defense. Lazarus Goldschmidt (1871–1950) scholar, bibliophile, and translator of the Talmud into German had attacked Fromer. Goldschmidt, whose major work was his translation of the entire Babylonian Talmud into German, was a controversial figure who engaged in sharp personal polemics against leading scholars of his time (Immanuel Loew, David Hoffman, and others, in addition to Fromer), publishing a number of pamphlets attacking his adversaries.
Fromer was a native of the Ghetto of Lodz in Russian Poland and sometime librarian of the Jewish community at Berlin. He pursued a secular education in the West, eventually accepting a position as librarian of the Jewish community of Berlin. Fromer, who was recognized as an authority on the Talmud translated selections from the Babylonian Talmud; this work is said to reflect his ongoing struggle to reconcile his western identity with his traditional background. Among his important contributions, in addition to his work on the Talmud, was his criticism of Professor Werner Sombart's important work Die Juden und das Wirtschaftsleben. Fromer’s review appeared in the Zukunft of October 28, 1911, being described as a work in itself, and an illuminating contribution to the literature of the Jewish question.
