Paragraph 1    With extensive handwritten notes by the Author's son.
Commentary on Pirkei Avot by R. Jacob ben Naphtali Gruenwald together with two addendas, one on the proper education of children, the other Seder ha-Yom. The title page has a frame with a green border and highlights of the text in red. R. Greenwald writes “this is my portion of all my labor” (cf. Ecclesiastes 2:10) “at which I labored under the sun” (cf. Ecclesiastes 1:3). It was brought to press by his sons, R. Avigdor and R. Jekutiel Judah. The verso has a warning against unauthorized reprinting; the price, 60 lirah; and a paragraph praising the printer and his staff, noting that all were Sabbath observers. There are approbations from R. Hayyim Zevi Titelbaum of Sighet, R. Solomon Zalman Ehrenreich, R. Saul Bloch, R. Joseph Hayyim Sonnenfeld, R. Eliezer David ben Amram Gruenwald of Satmer, and R. Isaiah Silberstein. There is an introduction from R. Gruenwald, an introduction to Pirkei Avot and the text, comprised of Pirkei Avot in vocalized square letters in the center of the page accompanied by the commentary of Rashi and of Helek Ya’akov. At the end are the two addendas noted on the title page.

Seini is a village in Transylvania, N. W. Rumania; until the end of World War I and between 1940 and 1944 within Hungary. A geographical-historical description of Hungary published in 1799 mentions Jewish inhabitants among the Catholics and Protestants in Seini. A community headed by a rabbi probably existed there by the close of the 18th century; from its inception the community was Orthodox. In 1885 the community became the official center for the Jews in the surrounding area. The Jewish population numbered 673 (13% of the total population) in 1930.

The Seini community was important in the history of Transylvanian Jewry because of the Hebrew printing press established there by Jacob Wieder. The first Hebrew work was printed in 1904 and the last in 1943. Between the two world wars the press was among the most important in Transylvania. It printed religious works, religious periodicals, and several works in Yiddish. A member of this family of printers, the son of the founder, Judah Wieder, settled in Haifa in 1932 and established a press there.
