A receipt for funds to subsidize three young men, signed by the Gabba'ei for the charity box for guests, Kuppat Orehim. It is dated Rosh Hodesh Sivan 5595 (1835). The hakhnasat orehim ("welcoming visitors") society generally owned a hostelry or rented a room or two from a resident family to accommodate respectable and scholarly travelers who would not stay in the hekdesh (“poor house”) reserved for transients of both sexes.
