This listing is an independent item not part of any collection
Only edition. 26, pp. folio 315:200 mm., wide margins. A very good copy bound in modern full cloth boards.
Photographic descriptions of and moving appeal for support in rebuilding the ancient synagogue of Livorno (Leghorn). There is a Hebrew title page and introduction, reading right to left, and from left to right a title page with Italian, Hebrew, English and French. It is followed by an appeal in Italian, English and French, signed by the chief rabbi, Prof. Sabato Alfredo Toaff, President of the Consulta Rabbinica Italiana; President of the Community, Prof. Renzo Cabib; and the four members of the Committee for the Rebuilding of the Temple and instructions as to where contributions should be sent. The appeal begins that the synagogue, a national monument, the most beautiful in Europe, was completely destroyed in World War II through bombardments and sackings. It is now being rebuilt, with the help of the Italian government, in modern design in the cener of the city. The task, however, is to great for the community, which has suffered greatly, and is reduced in both numbers and means. There are several pages of text, in ach of the languages, describing the history of the synagogue, its composition, and use, and how the new synagogue will be built. All of this is accompanied by several pages of black and white photographs showing the exterior and interior of the old synagogue, which was beautiful, a model and drawings of the new synagogue, and beginnings of construction.
