Description Information
[47] ff., 167:114 mm., ink on heavy paper, 25 lines per page, written in a beautiful Yemenite script, signed and dated, light age staining. A beautiful and complete manuscript bound in modern half vellum over boards.
Abridged edition of R. Yiyah b. Jacob Salih (b. 1804), Mekor Hayyim on the laws of kosher slaughter and processing. The scribe and/or author, Hayyim b. Yiyah Salih of Sana, states in the introduction that he excerpted the material and the work as the original as his name is also Hayyim! The original Mekor Hayyim enjoyed widespread distribution throughout Yemen.

For hundreds of years the Yemenite Jewish communities followed their traditional ways of secular and religious life, not being influenced by external trends and currents. Some customs in the Yemenite prayer rites go back to the prayer book of R. Saadiah Ga'on. From the 16th century on the Kabbalah and especially later its Lurianic school and system found its way to Yemen and influenced Jewish literary production in the areas of commentaries to the Bible, prayers, and liturgic poetry. All of this rich history is reflected in this work.
