During the nineteenth century, Simha C. Peixotto (1807-1892) helped establish the Hebrew Sunday School Society, wrote America's first textbook for Jewish children, managed the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society. She shared with prominent Jewish women like Rebecca Gratz, Ellen Phillips, and Mary M. Cohen, overlapping roles and responsibilities in the creation, and continued service on the boards, of a multitude of local and national Jewish institutions. Isaac Leeser, according to several accounts, had his romantic hope for Simha dashed by her father.
