Parody - Ha-Matslif
[Polemic] Zeeb ben Selig Ashur – editor
This listing is an independent item not part of any collection
Only edition. 24 pp. quarto 248:140 mm., light age staining. A very good copy bound in modern cloth boards.
Rare copy of this edition of the Hebrew journal Ha-Matslif, this being number two, a special Purim edition, printed entirely on orange paper. The title page is an illustration of a man holding a whip (ha-matslif). The verso of the title page has what purports to be an approbation and warning from Aaron Jacob ha-Kohen Kook, written in a classic rabbinic if not serious style. Next is a full page statement of purpose, beginning not only to we come to whip (matslif) but also to smite, to smite without mercy on the right and on the left, on the thighs, great blows until blood flows. They will pass throughout the land, with and breadth, and all will see their strap. Malkus should not be light in your eyes. Now that the the rabbinate has gathered and returned the crown of the rabbinate and the strap is now in their hand to strike the children of Israel, we are obligated to honor our exalted rule. Next is a page and a half of verse, followed by articles and more verse. One article is entitled the world that was not was not created, another Bat Zelophad, actually a three act play, a lecture and shi’ur, a letter to the court including a proposal, and more, all very clever. Ha-Matslif was only published briefly, from 1920 through 1922.
