Description
   Bi-lingual Hebrew Judeo-Arabic novellae on Sefer Bereshit by R. Shimon of Djerba ha-Kohen. The title page cleverly describes Maaseh Hoshev (skilful work, Exodus, var. cit.) as notarikon novellae, pleasant, novel, and gathered, how goodly from Shimon ha-Kohen the initial letters spelling Hoshev. It informs that in the book will be found precious novellae and choice explanations on the Humesh Humshei Torah. To to perceive the words of understanding . . . justice, and judgment, and equity (Proverbs 1:2-3) the work of the hands of an artist (Song of Songs 7:2). R. Shimon was also the author of Mateh Shimon on Pirkei Avot. It further states that the book is printed on good paper with attractive letters in Arabic so that it will be easily understood by all, the sage and the simple, the elderly and the young. It is dated and proclaim liberty throughout all the land (Leviticus 25:10). There are approbations from R. Joseph Bucratz, R. Maklof Adan, R. Calfon Moses ha-Kohen, and Rahamim Hai Havita ben Hananiah ha-Kohen, all of Djerba. There is an introduction from the mishtadlim, whose efforts brought the book to press, four pages of ziyyonim of departed, and then the text. The Hebrew is on the top of the page in rabbinic type, excepting initial words or letters, the Judeo-Arabic below in square letters. The text encompasses all of Sefer Bereshit.
