Detailed
Description
Detailed discussion syllabus issued by the Commission on Synagogue Activities of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations prepared by R. Samuel Glasner. As stated in the forward, the purpose of this discussion material, the first in the series, is intended to provide suitable discussion material on current Jewish topics, here dealing with vital matters close to the minds and hearts of the congregational members. The subject, Religion in a World at War, is subdivided into eight subtopics: 1) Where was God at Dunkirk; 2) is war sinful; 3) will prayer stop Hitler? 4) is there room for the “Japs” in Heaven? 5) Shall we return to Orthodoxy? 6) How can the synagogue help the war effort? 7) is democracy religion? And 8) is life worthwhile today? The pamphlet begins with a preliminary material, including R. Glanser’s congregation’s experience, suggested mterials, and four steps for speakers, which begins “set a fire! Arrest your audience’s attention by some dramatic, surprising or extremely interesting statement or anecdote. The actual text is comprised of introductions to each topic, each with two titles, as some congregations will respond more to dramatic titles whereas others might find it too sensational; points to stimulate discussion; and references. The introductions are readable and interesting and arresting. For example, 2) is war sinful, has the second heading of whqat is sin? And begins “‘This is God’s war!’ said Joe Lewis. But the various churches have not been nearly so quick to make of this war a religious crusade as have been the masses of people or were the churches themselves during the last war. They wish to avod the disillusionment and shame which followed the war-time hysteria. . . .” In 5) Shall we return to Orthodoxy? The experience of Reformed chaplains of Jewish soldiers desiring more ritual and the disapproval of the neglect of Jewish ceremonials by American Jewry is discussed. Town Hall Discussions – Religion in a World at War is both an interesting work in its own right but also a window into Jewish thought and concerns in the early years of World War II.
