Detailed
Description
Attempted refutation of the commentaries of Don Isaac Abrabanel and R. Moses Alshekh and portions of the Yalkut Shimoni on those portions of Isaiah (52:13-53:12) relating to the Messiah by Constantin L'Empereur (1591-1648). L'Empereur, an orthodox Calvinist, was a Christian-Hebraist. He first held the position of professor of theology and Oriental languages at the University of Harderwijk and, from 1627, was at the University of Leiden where, in 1633, he became controversarium Judaicarum professor (professor of Jewish controversies), a chair intended to educate scholars able to engage Jews in polemics and to missionize Jews. His position notwithstanding, and certainly not a philo-Semite, L'Empereur was more scholarly than advocatory. Among his works is an edition of the Mishnah Bava Kamma in Hebrew with accompanying Latin translation and commentary.

The title page lists the contents in Hebrew and Latin, that it is the above commentaries, adding in Latin, in red ink, that it is on Isaiah "Esaiae Prophetiam 30" with refutations in favor of Christianity. It is followed by a dedication to the States General and a preface, both in Latin, a title page for the portion on the Abrabanel, the commentary of the Abrabanel in Hebrew with translation and refutation; the portion for the Alshekh, except that here there is only a header and no separate title page; and similarly for the abstracts the Yalkut Shimoni; concluding with indexes.

The selection of these Hebrew works was not fortuitous. Abrabanel a popular exegete, who addressed issues of concern to Jews and Christians, ably citing sources from the latter. Perhaps because of the harshness of Abrabanel's criticism of Christianity, L'Empereur did not translate Abrabanel's Hebrew, the Latin being limited to L'Empereur's commentary. e Latin being limited to LEmpereur's commentary. Alshekh interprets these passages based on Midrashim, often with allegory and with profound spiritual insight. Both commentaries were welI known to Christian - Hebraists, who, as with L'Empereur, attempted to refute their interpretations of Scriptures, particularly the messianic passages.
