Announcement from the Badatz to the Ashkenaz community concerning the use of electricity on Shabbat. The issue is that work done in a factory increases the flow of electricity or the use of additional lights in the city increases the current. This would appear to be impermissible except in case of an emergency. It notes, however, that some later authorities granted a heter based on the fact that the owner and workers in factories are non-Jews. After studying the issue it they find that the machinery involved does not require human intervention but works automatically. If the machinery malfunctions the use of backup equipment is by non-Jews. This is considered amira de-amira and it is therefore permitted to use electric lights on Shabbat. The announcement is signed by R. Isaac Frankel, R. Pinchas Epstein, and R. Simha Bunim Warner.
