Detailed
Description
Admonition by Agudat Israel that states that it is with deep emotion that that the righteous rabbinic authorities and Torah sages caution the Jewish community about lighting candles on Shabbat and festival nights and Yarhzeits and for Yizkor (the day of remembering souls on Pesah) in synagogues and Batei Midrashim. This is due to the pressing conditions of the times. Even though lighting in commemoration of the yahrzeit to honor our forefathers is very precious in our eyes in these difficult times it is preferable to reduce the lighting of candles and to donate the money to charity. The flyer points out that it is a holy duty to help bear the burden of the war as much as possible. Because the matter concerns the peace and prosperity of the country it is incumbent upon us to make great offerings (korbanus) for our land and king. It is dated Adar ה"תרע"ז (5677 = February/March 1917). The reference is to the first World War and the king is Charles I, last ruler of the Austria-Hungary and successor to Kaiser Franz Joseph (1830-1916).

Although the text is entirely in Hebrew the heading and address of Agudas Israel is given in German.
