Detailed
Description
Order of ceremonies and liturgies upon the dedication of a new synagogue in Haarlem, capital of North Holland province, Netherlands. In 1605 a few Portuguese Jews from Amsterdam obtained a charter from the municipality allowing them to settle freely and build a synagogue, on the condition that 50 families took residence in the town. Because of this condition no community was established at the time, but this liberal charter determined in practice the legal position of the Jews in the Netherlands. In the middle of the 18th century, a small Ashkenazi congregation was formed, led for 20 years by Simeon Boas of The Hague. The synagogue was consecrated in 1841 and enlarged in 1896.
