Description
   On the traits and qualities of Moses, written in response to a perceived negative image of Moses, by R. Hayyim Isaac Aaron ben Judah Leib Rapaport of Vilkomir. The title page begins, this booklet comes to relate that which the Torah testifies on our Rabbi Moses, who, from his birth, was in his entirety (kelil) all good, as it says, “she saw that he was [good]” (Exodus 2:2). However, the primary essence of the good is that his merit should spread to us, our rabbis, sages of the holy Talmud and the holy Zohar. R. Hayyim also writes on the title page that in the last fifty years one of the sages of the generation, author of Tiferet Yisrael, copied in his work at the end of the Order of Nashim a letter that he found. This letter, from an unknown source, writes that Moses’ character was evil, he was arrogant and desired wealth, all of which is contrary to that which is written in the Torah. R. Hayyim has therefore, written this work to show that the letter is a forgery, entirely false. Kelil Tiferet has approbations from R. Mordecai Feinstein and R. Elia David Teomim and an introduction. At the end of the volume is nusah ha-Kabbalah Hadashah, a tefilah that should be said at the time of reading the Torah.

The reference on the title page to Moses’ negative qualities appears at the end of Kiddushin in the commentary on Mishnayot entitled Tiferet Yisrael (first published between 1810 and 1850) by R. Israel ben Gedaliah Lipschuetz’s (Lipschütz, 1782-1860), rabbi at Dessau and afterwards at Danzig. R. Lipschuetz’s purpose was not to demonstrate Moses’ negative traits but, based on this story, to show how he overcame them so that he became who he was and was able to receive the Torah on Mount Sinai. Recent scholarship now believes that the story to be of medieval origin from non-Jewish sources.
